Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them: Everything We Know So Far

7. It Was Supposed To Be A Documentary

If you're wondering why it's taken Warner Bros. so long to follow in the footsteps of Marvel Studios by releasing a slate of DC Comics movies, much of that is to do with the success of the Harry Potter franchise, The studio simply didn't need to divide their attention, but when they ran out of J.K. Rowling's books to adapt, they obviously had to start expanding their horizons somewhat. However, clearly reluctant to say goodbye to this world, the idea of a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie was brought up, and it's briefly mentioned in Entertainment Weekly's feature that the original idea was to make it a faux documentary. That doesn't sound like the most interesting premise for a movie set in a magical world like this, but it certainly would have been unique. You have to remember that Fantastic Beasts is based on a very brief textbook which was released back in 2001 detailing the creatures who inhabit the world created by Rowling (it even included notes written inside by Harry and Ron), so it's not like the studio had a lot of story material to work with other than the brief history of the character the author had come up with. However, it was the Rowling's idea to write her first screenplay in what is envisioned as a trilogy of movies, so now you know why she's been too busy to write that much desired - but unlikely - eighth Harry Potter novel.
