Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them: Everything We Know So Far

4. Newt's Collection Of Fantastic Beasts

Is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them taking inspiration from Doctor Who? In one major respect, yes! That briefcase you see Newt Scamander carrying around is one of those magical devices which is much bigger on the inside than on the out (like the TARDIS), and it's in there that the adventurer has habitats for a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from his travels around globe. Those can be hidden from the curious eyes of Muggles - and US Customs officials - with a the flip of a secret switch in the latch. It almost sounds like Newt will be able to climb inside his own suitcase to view his collection, and while we don't know specifically which new and returning Beasts are going to factor into the movie, at least one has been confirmed. That's a Niffler, a treasure hunting creature attracted to shiny things, and one which Eddie Redmayne became particularly fond of during shooting. "They have this wonderful love-hate relationship," he teased. "He€™s incredibly aggravating and wonderful at same time. He€™s a complete nightmare, yet Newt gets off on his playfulness and single-mindedness." Others which Entertainment Weekly hint may show up are Ashwinders, Lethifolds, Augureys, Bowtruckles, Crups, and Merpeople. While the creatures Newt interacts with will be brought to life by special effects, Katherine Waterson revealed the lengths Redmayne went to in order to ensure that his performance is as authentic as possible; he worked with real animal trainers and zookeepers! "The most endearing thing is watching Eddie interact with the beasts. It€™s so beautiful. He€™s worked out all these different dynamics with them."
