From the moment Harry steps foot in Hogwarts, Snape treats him with disdain – he actively enjoys embarrassing him in front of the class. And this doesn’t change as the series goes on, either. Every year, Snape makes Harry’s life more miserable than it already is.

Despite this, Snape is one of the funniest characters at Hogwarts. In both the books and the movies, there’s a comedic quality to his insults and his sullen attitude.

But the reason Snape surpasses the other teachers is because of his complexity. In The Deathly Hallows, we learn about his role as a double agent and his promise to keep Harry safe. And given Snape was partly responsible for the death of the woman he loved (Lily Potter), his entire story is also a redemption arc.
