Harry Potter: Ranking Every Hogwarts Teacher From Worst To Best
7. Alastair Moody/Barty Crouch Junior (Defence Against The Dark Arts)
Ironically enough, a Death Eater in disguise turned out to be a great Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Mad-Eye Moody’s lessons are gripping in both the book and the movie. After introducing himself, he performs three illegal curses in front of the class.
At the end of The Goblet of Fire, it turns out Mad-Eye Moody is actually Barty Crouch Junior – a Death Eater who everyone believed to be dead. In the book, Crouch gives a lengthy monologue after he’s unmasked about his backstory and how he came to be at Hogwarts.
And the clues for this brilliant plot twist are beautifully laid out. When you re-read The Goblet of Fire, you appreciate just how many hints there are about Moody’s true identity.
Crouch is one of the most underrated villains in the franchise. Though he only appears in one of Harry’s adventures, he’s an immensely skilled Death Eater who manages to fool everybody, including Dumbledore.
