5. Remus Lupin - Self-Hatred And Shame

Remus Lupin is the absolute best character in the Harry Potter series, a fact proven by science and magic alike. Turned into a werewolf at a young age as revenge for his father's part in apprehending and imprisoning Fenrir Greyback, Lupin struggled with his identity most of his life. Indeed, the best times of his life appear to have been within the halls of Hogwarts.

Becoming friends with James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew, Lupin's lycanthropy was managed by his friends, the self-proclaimed Marauders, who brought him to the Shrieking shack monthly. There, they adopted animal forms and accompanied him during his monthly excursions as a wereowolf, perhaps the only times he was at peace with the change.

Further on, Professor Dumbledore would welcome Lupin back into the school as a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, guaranteeing him a potion that would prevent his transformation. During his time there, Lupin was perhaps the best teacher Harry and his friends had, providing their first legitimately practical classes against dark magic.

Lupin fell in love with Nymphadora Tonks, a fellow member of the Order, but spurned her repeatedly. Initially, he rejected the very thought of being with her, and then nearly left her when discovering she was pregnant after they were married. It was only Harry's proclamation calling him a coward that shook him to his senses. Lupin's hatred of his condition and fear of passing it on nearly resulted in him giving up one of the few pleasures he had in life.
