Barty Crouch Junior was also given a life sentence in Azkaban for torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom. And despite how much Barty Crouch Senior hated his son, he ultimately gave in to his wife’s demands and developed an escape plan.

Using the Polyjuice Potion, Crouch Junior escaped Azkaban disguised as his mother, who in turn remained in Azkaban disguised as her son. He then remained under the influence of his father’s Imperius Curse for years, but he was discovered by Bertha Jorkins – a Ministry worker who visited the Crouches’ home for work purposes.

Though Crouch Senior put a Memory Charm on her to hide the truth, the spell wasn’t impenetrable. After Bertha was captured by Wormtail in Albania, Voldemort broke through the Memory Charm and discovered the truth about the Crouch family.

Crouch Junior, meanwhile, was becoming more resilient to his father’s Imperius Curse. And during the Quidditch World Cup, he managed to steal Harry’s wand (whilst under an Invisibility Cloak) and cast the Dark Mark over the campsite. Soon after, Voldemort and Wormtail joined forces with Crouch Junior and put his father under the Imperius Curse.

The three of them then developed a scheme that would return Voldemort to full power. Using Bertha’s information about the Triwizard Tournament, Crouch Junior arrived at Hogwarts disguised as Mad-Eye Moody and manipulated the tournament so Harry would be the first to reach the Triwizard Cup – which was actually a portkey that led him to Voldemort.

Crouch Junior’s plan worked remarkably well. In addition to bamboozling the Goblet of Fire and manipulating the tournament, he kept his true identity hidden for almost a year. Of course, he should have returned to Azkaban, but owing to the ineptitude of Cornelius Fudge, he was killed by two Dementors.
