Harry Potter: What Happened To Everyone Who Escaped Azkaban

Sirius Black was an easy character to feel sorry for. Though he enjoyed his time at Hogwarts with James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew, he always had a difficult relationship with his family.

After leaving school, Sirius was wrongly imprisoned for the crimes of Pettigrew – who had betrayed the Potters and then murdered thirteen Muggles whilst faking his own death. Sirius was made to suffer in Azkaban for twelve years before making his escape in the summer of 1993. Due to his weakened state, Sirius was able to slip through the bars of his cell whilst disguised as an Animagus before swimming to the mainland.

Having recognised Pettigrew (who had the ability to transform into a rat) on Ron’s shoulder in the Daily Prophet, Sirius headed towards Hogwarts with the hope of taking revenge. However, Pettigrew managed to escape and Sirius was forced to go into hiding.

Though he kept in contact with Harry in The Goblet of Fire, he played a much more significant role in The Order of the Phoenix. His family home – Number 12 Grimmauld Place – became the headquarters for the Order and he also took part in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.

Tragically, Sirius never left the Ministry alive. His twisted cousin – Bellatrix Lestrange – murdered him before fleeing the scene and returning to her master.
