Edgar Wright's adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man is one of the most disappointing films of the last few years - an oddly personality-devoid, generic dystopian sci-fi action flick with a lousy fake-out of an ending to add insult to injury.

King's novel concludes with protagonist Ben Richards flying a plane into the Games Network's skyscraper HQ, killing both himself and The Running Man's producer Dan KIllian in an act of violent defiance.

While the spectre of 9/11 has caused Hollywood to shy away from such imagery over the last quarter-century, Wright sure as heck made folk think his remake would go the ballsy route and do it anyway.

In the climax, a deepfake is aired of Ben (Glen Powell) threatening to carry out his kamikaze attack before being shot out of the sky, at which point the scene is interrupted by an activist known as The Apostle (Daniel Ezra).

The Apostle reveals that the events we've just witnessed were doctored - Ben actually ejected out of the plane before it exploded, after which he met up with his family, whose deaths were faked.

While it's understandable that Wright wasn't able to fully execute the grim eventualities of King's original vision, the fact that he hinted at it so aggressively only to pull the rug out with a deeply dopey "gotcha!," left a sour taste for many.
