Heath Ledger: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
2. Ennis Del Mar - Brokeback Mountain
Coming with the both succinct but misleading nickname of the gay cowboy movie, Brokeback Mountain caught the attention of many less for the hanky-panky and more for bringing a totally convincing relationship to the screen. The two lovers in the movie are played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Ledger who both convincingly play the longing and social difficulty with none of the childishness the film was met with. Its kinda funny that a film that has its characters hated and shunned would find itself the centre of a similar controversy, despite there being forty years between when the (fictional) story is set and the films release. Ledger certainly gets the meatier role, with his Ennis having to deal with the conflict of love for Gyllenhaals Jack and duty to his family, as well as having to deal with the loss of his lover. The performance earned Ledger his first Oscar nomination, although like the film itself he lost out.
