Hellboy 3: 10 Comic Plots That Should Be Used

2. King Arthur

Even if Del Toro is uninterested in using much of the climactic The Storm and The Fury arc, the link to Arthurian legend that is a key part of that story is a further element of Hellboy's mix of destinies that it would be interesting for the director to play with.

In the Hellboy universe, King Arthur's son and killer Mordred fathered a secret child with a witch. That child herself became a witch and so Arthur's lineage passed down through generations of women to Sarah, Hellboy's mother, meaning that Anung Un Rama is not only the demon of the apocalypse, but also the mythic heir of the throne of England. Ultimately this all leads to Hellboy summoning up an army of England's glorious dead to defeat the forces of darkness.

Arthurian legend brings a level of complex plot associations where the audience can be assumed to have some prior knowledge, meaning that there is no need to get bogged down in exposition. The movie can just jump in with an assumption that people will know about Arthur, Excalibur and all that and get that this makes things kind of a big deal.

As the final film in a trilogy, audiences are going to want things to go out with a bang and, in that case, what could be better than seeing our demonic hero wielding Excalibur at the head of an army of undead medieval warriors, battling witches and dragons? Not to mention his greatest enemy of all...
