Hellraiser Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
3. The Human Characters (Mostly) Suck
There's no getting around it - the majority of the human characters in this film are completely flat, lifeless, and one-dimensional, which is especially concerning considering how damn long we spend with them.
The only exceptions are drug addict protagonist Riley (Odessa A'zion) and Machiavellian businessman Roland Voight (Goran Višnjić), while the rest of the non-Cenobite cast are, frankly, a bunch of bores.
The cast consists primarily of Riley's brother Matt (Brandon Flynn), boyfriend Trevor (Drew Starkey), and a few other assorted friends, who despite their prominent screen time have little in the way of distinct personalities that might make their presence worthwhile.
Ultimately most of them are just fodder for the Cenobites, yet the script clearly had the room to do something interesting with them. Instead, they're a whole lotta nothing.
