The Hobbit: 10 Things You May Have Missed In The Battle Of The Five Armies

6. Angmar (At Last)

The realm of Angmar is one of the most discussed Middle-Earth locales to never be visited on screen. Until The Battle Of The Five Armies, that is - the fortress of Gundabad Legolas and Tauriel visit is on the borders of the former domain of the eponymously named Witch-King. It's one of the expansions of the short book into an epic trilogy that proves incredibly satisfying for Tolkien fans, offering some key lore you never expected to see - Angmar traditionally ceased to be relevant millennia before the events of The Hobbit, when the land, and its ring-wielding leader, fell. First name-checked in The Return Of The King, Angmar has been given a more prominent role in The Hobbit on film than it did in print. In the book, Gundabad is where the Misty Mountain goblins mobilise before attacking the dwarves at Erebor. With the main orc antagonists switched from the Goblin King's followers to former adversaries of Thorin and co. and Dol Guldur an important backdrop, it's become more of a tangible threat.
