The Hobbit: 10 Things You May Have Missed In The Battle Of The Five Armies

3. Moments From The Trailer (Not In The Film)

It's become almost a tradition for a Hobbit movie to feature scenes in the trailer that don't make it into the theatrical version. An Unexpected Journey had Bilbo exploring Rivendell and happening upon the shards of Narsil, while The Desolation Of Smaug featured shots of Gandalf coming across Thráin II, Thorin's father, in his visit to Dol Guldur. And, not wanting to be left out, The Battle Of The Five Armies followed suit - the teaser trailer focused on an ice-river-set chariot sequence, with some dwarves, pulled by rams, going up against wargs, that was totally absent from the final film. Judging by the setting (it's in the plain between Erebor and Dale) and those involved, this probably takes place during the battle itself, although what narrative purpose (if any) it has is unclear. Wargs are an essential part of the titular skirmish in Tolkien lore, but were rather absent in the finished film, so at the very least it would have been nice to see it included for that reason. Both the Rivendell and Thráin sequences were introduced into the film for the Extended Edition home release, so expect to see this action beat added when the final movie gets the same treatment later in 2015.
