The Hobbit: 11 Amazing Things You Missed In The Desolation Of Smaug

9. No More Misty Mountains Cold

Although the dishwashing song was a bizarre carry over from the book, I have to say I did enjoy the dwarves singing The Misty Mountains. Not only does Richard Armitage have a good voice on him, but hearing it slowly evolve into the dwarves trademark theme gave a nice edge to their actions, especially when the film up to that point had relied on a lot of Rings music. Like any good soundtrack piece a quick tempo change can turn it into something completely different and I was more than happy to let it become a motif of the trilogy. So imagine the disappointment when the song doesn't make even the slightest return in the sequel. There were so many moments when the dwarves were getting into scrapes where it would have been incredibly welcome, but instead there was a cover much less memorable. Other recurring themes from The Lord Of The Rings made their little appearances, which makes this all the more peculiar. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks it could be an attempt to distance the film from the disappointment of An Unexpected Journey, but that€™d be incredibly misplaced; Howard Shore€™s theme was one of the saving graces of the film. Maybe it was just something simpler, like the fact we€™d left the eponymous range behind. Although that doesn't lessen the disappointment.
