5. Can We Expect Any More Cameos?
One thing you can't criticise The Hobbit for is providing The Lord Of The Rings fans with plenty of opportunity to geek out at the reappearance of characters from the original trilogy. On top of those already present in the book (Gandalf, Gollum, Elrond, those eagles) we've had Old Bilbo, Frodo, Legolas, Galadriel, Saruman have all been worked into the narrative (although the latter two were already present in events from the appendices). It's amazing The final film offers plenty more of these appearances; Legolas has unfinished business and Ian Holm will no doubt pop up one last time to bookend the trilogy, while we know the White Council will play a large part in fending off the Necromancer (and sending him to Mordor). But could there be more that are being kept from us? Could we be about to get a surprise akin to (SPOILER for X-Men) the return of the original cast at the end of Days Of Future Past? Gollum would be the obvious returner here. Andy Serkis has been an Assistant Director on the trilogy, so getting him to mo-cap suit up one last time would be easy and could be done without causing much of a media stir. Between when we last saw him in An Unexpected Journey (sad in a cave) to where he's first seen in The Lord Of The Rings (captive in Mordor) there's a lot of situations in which he could appear and with Jackson's love of multiple endings don't be surprised if one of those is Sméagol leaving the Misty Mountains.
