The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies - 10 Questions We Need Answering
4. What Will The Dwarves Actually Do In The Lake-town Attack?
In a big divergence from the story of the book (although logical given how cartoonish battles with thirteen protagonists looked in An Unexpected Journey), a small part of the company of Dwarves left in Laketown when Thorin and co. head to the Lonely Mountain. In the short term it allowed The Desolation Of Smaug to have a multi-stranded finale not just confined to the Lonely Mountain, but looking towards the third film it could have a much bigger impact. Picking up exactly where the previous film ended, The Battle Of The Five Armies' first act will probably be dominated by Smaug's attack on Lake-town. Having Fíli, Kíli, in and Bofur in the low-rate Venice will no doubt give us some people on the ground to empathise with as fire and death rain down, but could they be a little more involved than just recognisable faces among the carnage while Bard fulfils his family's destiny? Like a very difficult video-game boss, Smaug has only one weakness (the loosened scale on his underbelly), which makes it hard for any other attacks on the dragon to not be fruitless padding. So yeah, we have literally no idea what Jackson has in store for these dwarves. Let's hope it's worth them not going to Erebor.
