8. Dain Answers Thorin€™s Call

With Bard and Thranduill facing his small company of dwarves down, Thorin sends a call - via raven - up to the nearby mountains for support and an answer comes in the heavily CGIed form of Billy Connolly's Dain Ironfoot. If the image above doesn't look anything like the ageing Scottish comedian, that's because it's not him, but the body double who stood in for the battle scenes between bouts of CG images. As characters go, Dain is a good addition: he rides a battle pig, is a mighty warrior and plays an important part in the wider Middle Earth mythology. Unfortunately in the film he's no more than a comic distraction: yes he's clearly mighty, but the overall feel of his appearance (which is complicated by the CGI not really being all that great) is of a Scrappy Doo sort of figure who's always spoiling for a fight. Sadly, the battle goat charge that featured in the trailer, and which would have starred Dain's 500 strong dwarf force was cut down dramatically and the supposedly legendary combatants end up getting cut down all too quickly. But then at least it means the CGI version of the character spends less time on screen.
