The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Spoilers - 12 Major Revelations Reviewed
7. Kili Loves Tauriel IDEMT
Peter Jackson's decision to include Tauriel as a brand new character was always going to be a controversial one. If it was done in the interest of increasing the number of female characters, then you can perhaps forgive the decision, but if, as seems to be the case now, she was introduced in order to add a romantic element that wasn't really necessary in the first place, then you have to really question the choice. In The Battle Of The Five Armies, Tauriel and Kili's love comes full circle, as they admit their feelings for each other, and basically add to the already ominous cloud of Dead Meat that hangs over them. Thranduill plays his part in the Romeo & Juliet story well, banishing Tauriel for her "unclean" love, and Legolas plays the spurned suitor with typical lack of any emotion whatsoever (which makes adding romance to the elven storyline seem a little bit odd on reflection). It's not a terrible sub-plot in honesty, but it just feels shoe-horned in, and rather worryingly, as soon as Tauriel admits her status as Love Interest, she becomes something of a lesser character, relegated to being a witness rather than an active player to most things.
