The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Spoilers - 12 Major Revelations Reviewed

6. The Goblin And Warg Armies Converge

Just as Dain is trumpeting his arrival and Thorin and the dwarves celebrating the arrival of their support, the earth literally moves to herald the arrival of the next of the Five Armies - the goblins under Azog's command. Despite the fact that he is ultimately overcome because he's an idiot (more of which soon), Azog is presented as a mighty war general: his decision to split his forces and attack the Free Men armies on two sides before a second wave of orcs from Gundabad (Azog's apparent home) almost proves successful. The goblin army also includes some special teams - trolls and war beasts to do the heavy lifting and artillery work and the earth eating worms that look suspiciously like creatures from Tremors - which prove to be major thorns in the sides of the armies of Free Men. The sequence in which the armies build is an impressive one, and the scale is similar to that of the climactic battles in The Return Of The King - though there's nothing really to rival the mumakil.
