Hocus Pocus 2 Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs

5. The First Act Is A MAJOR Drag

Though the film settles into a more entertaining groove from its second act onwards, the first reel is a bit of a slog, honestly.

Hocus Pocus 2 kicks off with a flashback featuring the Sanderson sisters in their childhood, before we flash forward to the present day and are introduced to the new high-schooler leads Becca (Whitney Peak), Izzy (Belissa Escobedo), and Cassie (Lilia Buckingham).

As a result, it's almost an entire half-hour before the Sanderson sisters as we know them - the reason anyone was interested in a sequel at all - finally show up. Considering how relatively uninteresting these establishing scenes are, viewers couldn't be blamed for getting a little impatient.

Again, the story comes to life once the aged iconic trio show up, but until then it's lacking the spark necessary to consistently entertain.
