Home Alone 1 And 2: 20 Easter Eggs, References & In-Jokes
8. Both Movies Have Hidden Swearing
Joe Pesci hasnt made a whole lot of family movies in his career, unless some families consider Raging Bull or Goodfellas wholesome entertainment. Pescis characters are known for their foul-mounted outbursts and violent tempers, and Pesci is no shrinking violet himself. So while shooting Home Alone he had a hard time expressing Harrys rage without swearing constantly, which might be more realistic but would have prevented the target audience from being able to see it. Pesci and the director came up with a compromise; he could swear to his hearts content, so long as he hid it behind incomprehensible muttering. They used the same tactic again for Lost In New York, where the muttering sounds even more aggressive. Some TV networks in America were paranoid about his vaguely sweary grunts, so they cut out the muttering just to be safe. One curse that slipped by them is when Marv mutters "S**t" in the original when trying to break into the house; it's so quiet that most people miss it.
