2009's The Collector was at one point intended to be a prequel to the Saw franchise but ultimately allowed to exist at its own original, standalone project, centered around a serial killer who breaks into people's homes and rigs them up with macabre traps.

Despite negative critical reviews the film was a modest box office success, and in 2012 a sequel, The Collection, was released.

Again it performed mildly well commercially in spite of critical disinterest, prompting series creators Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton to announce development of a third film, The Collected.

However, by 2018 reports emerged that progress had stalled due to the second film not making more money at the box office, and though shooting did begin in 2019, it was shut down after eight days of filming due to behind-the-scenes issues.

The last update came from Dunstan in the summer of 2024, when he claimed that the various legal entanglements surrounding The Collected had been resolved and he hoped the film could now get made.

But we've heard nothing since, and so it seems frustratingly unlikely that the project will ever pick up momentum again. Still, a reboot or re-imagining doesn't feel entirely out of the question.
