20 Horror Movie Happy Endings Nobody Saw Coming
12. Spring
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's fantastically genre-bending romantic sci-fi horror film Spring explores the relationship between a directionless young man, Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci), and Louise (Nadia Hilker), a young woman who is actually a 2,000-year-old mutant creature.
Every 20th spring, Louise finds a man to impregnate her, the cells allowing her to generate a new human form, but if she falls in love with one of her suitors, the hormones will prevent the regeneration process and turn her mortal.
The two spend Louise's final 24 hours together before she is due to change, but the film's closing moments suggest that Louise has fallen for Evan and will now live out a mortal life with him.
There's certainly a bittersweet quality to this ending, but considering how little deeply-felt romance there is in the horror genre, this is a rare one that'll make your heart soar in the closing stretch.
