4. The Crazy, Vibrant Animation

For all of the film's many flaws, it's hard to argue with the breezy appeal of Genndy Tartakovsky's surreal, wacky and lightning-paced animation style.

This is a film that doesn't ever really stick around in one place for too long, hurling gag after gag at the audience and always trying to wow them with new characters and ideas.

There are sequences in this movie that are legitimately quite visually stunning - a plane ride on a Gremlin airline is a ton of fun, for instance - and even when the script falters, it's hard to argue with Tartakovsky's expertise at crafting a smart sight gag.

2018 hasn't exactly served up many compelling studio animations so far, but Summer Vacation is sure to rank among the most visually unique and intriguing when it's all said and done.
