How Avengers: Infinity War Completely Changes The MCU

1. It Needs To Move On

For 10 years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely been centred around the Avengers, and especially Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, who are the only heroes to receive their own solo trilogies.

Furthermore, for six years we've had to be wary of the looming threat of Thanos and the importance of the Infinity Stones, both of which have been seeded through a number of movies across the various phases.

Infinity War draws all of those elements together and, while Avengers 4 will finish things off properly, this is the beginning of the end of the MCU as we know it and necessitates a 'moving on' of sorts. Marvel have already started planning for this, with the likes of Black Panther and Spider-Man ready to lead Phase 4, but it's the original three who remain the biggest draws, especially Iron Man and Cap. It's now at a place where they can be left behind for good, as can the story of the Infinity Stones, and it can branch out into new stories with new heroes (and perhaps new dimensions too).

It's notable that a lot of this movie takes place in space, which further establishes the cosmic side of this universe that we've seen in Guardians of the Galaxy. And while it wipes out a couple of planets, it does expand the scope for how far out the MCU can go. With more Guardians adventures on the horizon, Captain Marvel on the way, and names like Nova being thrown around, this - along with alternate dimension stories - could then make up a lot of the MCU's future. Infinity War might represent something of an end, but it's also just the beginning.
