How Jane Foster Becomes Thor

6. The First Time Jane Became Thor

Jane Foster would shockingly take on the moniker of Thor in 2014, yet that wasn't the first time that comic book readers had seen Jane suit up and wield Mjolnir.

For comics fans, there's always something fun about pondering alternative timelines or different spins on famed comic book moments. And while DC Comics has its Elseworlds tales, Marvel Comics fully embraced this concept with their What If? titles.

In the What If? series, established elements of Marvel lore are changed up and given a fresh lick of paint. Back in 1978, the tenth issue of What If? was dubbed What If Jane Foster Had Found the Hammer of Thor? - with the story doing exactly as it says on the tin.

Entrusted with the powers and abilities associated with Thor, Jane becomes a badass warrior in her own right. So much so, she becomes one of Asgard's sworn protectors, taking down Loki and even an alien invasion. A little bizarrely though, she also ends up marrying Odin.

After saving Asgard so many times, Jane is gifted the status of goddess, which in turn causes her to give up Mjolnir to Donald Blake, which then leads to Blake becoming Thor.

While this was merely a one-off What If? offering, Jane would famously get another crack at being Thor 30+ years later.
