How Jane Foster Becomes Thor

4. Tragedy Strikes

Jane Foster Thor
Marvel Comics

Any superhero worth their salt has so often had tragedy strike before they first donned the tights and cape - and Jane Foster had a particularly rough ride before she became Thor.

For poor Jane, her world unfurled at a truly shocking pace.

Firstly, Jane and her husband Keith Kincaid got divorced, which was followed by Jane losing custody of the pair's son, Jimmy. Tragically, both Keith and Jimmy would eventually be killed in a car accident - and that was only the tip of the iceberg for Foster.

During the time that Thor was off fighting the aforementioned Gorr, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer. Upon learning of Jane's horrific news, Thor invited her to Asgard. Finally deciding to accept that offer, Jane heads to Asgard to represent Earth as part of the Congress of the Worlds event that's taking place.

There, Jane refuses the offer of magic to assist in quelling her cancer, and instead she continues on with chemotherapy. But while this cancer was ravaging Jane Foster, Asgard and beyond began to be rocked by the arrival of a mysterious female referring to herself as the Goddess of Thunder.
