How Jane Foster Becomes Thor

3. The Mystery Of A New Thor

Jane Foster Thor
Marvel Comics

Yes, of course this Goddess of Thunder figure would wind up being revealed to be Jane Foster, but for a good while this was posed as a genuine mystery across the pages of Marvel Comics.

With Thor no longer worthy of wielding Mjolnir, the all-powerful hammer was calling out for a new master. And with many trying and failing to lift Mjolnir, it was this unknown female who was the chosen one who Mjolnir had deemed to be worthy.

Upon the Goddess of Thunder first appearing, she was instantly met with push back from Thor and Odin. With both unaware that this warrior was really Jane Foster, it took battles against Malekith the Accursed, the Dario Agger Minotaur, and the Absorbing Man for this badass to win approval from the Odinson and the All-Father. So impressed by her was he, Thor gave this newbie his name, with him referring to himself as simply Odinson.

As people tried to work out exactly who this new Thor was, Jane Foster is immediately ruled out for two very simple reasons. One, because she's a mere mortal human. And two, because she's extremely weakened due to the cancer that is ravaging her body.

Even when it was revealed to readers that Jane Foster was this new kickass Thor, so many of Marvel's finest heroes were kept in the dark about this fact.
