How Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Became The Best Superhero Film Since The Dark Knight

4. The Villains

There are plenty of villains in Into the Spider-Verse, almost one for every Spider-Man. While some such as Scorpion and Hammerhead serve more as goons than anything else, the three main villains each provide a unique and deep approach to the supervillain. These, of course, are Kingpin, Doc Ock and The Prowler.

The Prowler serves as the empathetic villain that has an emotional connection to Miles. Though he never turns to the side of good, he is murdered before he can get the chance, making his death all the more tragic.

Doc Ock meanwhile is a perfectly played example of the evil psychopath. Her intentions are not particularly deep and it doesn't matter. Her insane nature is a joy to watch play out, especially as her identity as Doc Ock was a secret reveal for the film. While her death was perhaps a little too hasty, it still worked well with the dangerous nature of the collapsing multiverse.

The film's version of Kingpin meanwhile would make Vincent D'Onofrio proud. As the film's main antagonist, he is an exceptionally menacing presence, especially shown through the murder of Peter Parker. This is combined with a twisted yet somewhat relatable motivation, doing whatever it takes to bring his dead family back. He provides a physical and mental threat to the heroes yet you still can't help but feel a little bad when his plan fails.
