The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Spoilers - 13 Key Elements Revealed & Reviewed

6. There Are Killer Monkeys, Trickster Birds, Killer Fog And Blood Rain

Catching Fire 4 Heavensbee's special Quarter Quell Games design is fiendish, with the tributes forced not only to look out for each other, but also for environmental dangers, which discourage them from camping in one place for too long, and which account for multiple tribute deaths. The arena design - which is based on a clock (as Wiress reveals after going a little bit wrong) has twelve different threats that happen for an hour in their relevant segments of the arena. First there's a poisonous fog that kills off Mags (but whose blisters are washed off with water confusingly,) and then a tidal wave that crashes from the edge of the map down to the middle, and kills an inconsequential tribute that noone really cares about. Then thirdly there's a monsoon of hot blood, followed by a plague of ravenous, enraged baboons, and finally (we only see five of the trials on screen) a flock of mimicking birds that confuse the tributes with cries for help from their loved ones to drive them insane. Not deadly exactly, but torturous all the same.
