Hunter Killer Review: 3 Ups & 5 Downs

2. Its Amusing Political Message

It's something of a happy accident that Hunter Killer's fictional politics ended up intersecting with real-world politics.

After all, the movie was shot over two years ago, before Donald Trump had become President and various related Russian scandals had come to light, and yet by happenstance, the film has an oddly topical air to it regardless.

Its ultimate message, that we're all human beings and we need to co-operate in order to weed out bad actors in our midst, might be corny and ridiculously earnest, but in our current era of geopolitical uncertainty, it honestly feels a bit refreshing.

In a time where the U.S. President is promoting tribal nationalism more than ever, for a major Hollywood movie to embrace a "'we're all citizens of the world" mindset feels mildly rebellious. That it does this without waving American flags in the audience's sight-line the entire time makes it all the more audacious.

Few will praise the movie for having a nuanced understanding of international relations, but as a fever dream of global co-operation, it's something absurd to aspire to for sure.
