5. Gary Mitchell
If space, and the wondrous/terrifying things contained there in, is going to be the central device for the next Star Trek film, then one thing Pegg and his team of writers need to revisit is the Galactic Barrier. Without getting into too much technical detail, the barrier surrounds the entire Milky Way galaxy and has the ability to alter the psionic makeup of all those who come into contact with it. Revealed in later Star Trek series to be something the Q created, the crew of the original Enterprise happen across it during their 5 year mission while investigating the demise of another ship. After their initial exposure, crewman Gary Mitchell begins to develop powerful psychic powers and begins to exert his increasingly twisted will on the rest of the crew. ESP is something that Star Trek has been incredibly wary of in the past (moving objects around with the mind is maybe a little too much like the Force for them to get away with after all) but it's nonetheless an interesting proposition for them to explore. Taking the Enterprise to the very edge of the galaxy would be a great premise for the new movie, and then having them face a danger from within their own family is a smart twist to put on it. One downside to this is that, in Into Darkness' reboot of Khan, the crew has already faced in individual with a greatly superior mental capacity. Whilst he wasn't quite elevated to the near god-like status Mitchell managed to achieve, it's not a million miles away from the notion that they have to overcome an individual that's both smarter and stronger than they are. Still, the Galactic Barrier is essentially the edge of space as we know it, and using someone like Mitchell as a way to make that manifest leaves the writers with the potential to do almost anything they can imagine.
