Idris Elba: 8 Villains He Could Play In Star Trek 3
4. Kruge
At the beating heart of Into Darkness was the idea of taking the original Star Trek sequel and reimagining it for the alternative universe. If the producers think that's a good idea then the next logical step is to look at the third film, and find a way to bring that into the 21st Century as well. Whilst Kirk and co are considerably younger at this point than their Shatner-led counterparts were in Star Trek III, large parts of the plot would still be transferrable. For example, with Starfleet now going all out to ready themselves for everything space can throw at them, it's not a huge stretch to imagine the Genesis device could be years ahead of schedule - giving them the ability to expand the Federation at a greatly increased pace. Likewise, with the Klingon Empire likely to be the chief antagonists this time out, there's a part to be played by Star Trek III's villain Kruge, a fearsome commander of brutality and cunning. Although not a hugely popular character with the fanbase, Kruge would offer the writers an interesting proposition to build a story around. Here is a warrior, who, although driven by honour and tradition and all those other inherently Klingon values, marries them with an almost Romulan-like cunning and sinister streak. Although not brilliantly used in his sole Trek appearance, he's a character who has all the necessary attributes to make a great modern villain. Elba's take on this sort of role would be fascinating, as Kruge is about as close to the stereotypical Klingon as was ever featured in the films. He could ape Christopher Lloyd's portrayal as a level-headed leader prone to flashes of maniacal rage, or put a far more underhand and brutal slant on the franchise's most famous aliens.
