Incredibles 2 Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

Ups...

6. The Short Film, "Bao", Is Hilarious, Poignant & Very, Very Weird

In typical Pixar fashion, the main feature is preceded by a short, and boy, it's a doozy alright. Bao is the first ever Pixar short directed by a woman, having been helmed by Chinese-Canadian director Domee Shi, and it's one you won't be forgetting any time soon.

Again, no spoilers here, but the basic story sees a middle-aged Chinese woman bonding with a cute, sentient dumpling which comes to life before her very eyes. The short is by turns funny, cute, beautifully animated, wonderfully affecting...and perhaps a little too oddball for some tastes.

There has already been much written about the short's big surprise, a dark moment that's proven too much for some children, but as you'd expect from Pixar, it deals with delicate subject matter with tact and grace. If it isn't nominated for the Best Animated Short Oscar, something's gone horribly wrong.
