Independence Day 2: 10 Reasons Why Resurgence Might Actually Be Good
Could it do the unthinkable and be more than a nostalgia trip?
A sequel to 1996's Independence Day was just about the last project most film fans expected to be greenlit when the question of reviving old franchises inevitably came up. Nearly two decades have passed since the original movie was released, and while it was a box office smash, it hasn't exactly been recognized as even the best action/sci-fi flick of its era. That said, fan interest is definitely high - even without Will Smith involved. Part of that is the curiosity factor: few properties have come back after such a long dormant period, and those have always been among the most beloved: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park. An essentially standalone film with no existing sequels? That's a completely different animal. Another part of it is also the fun factor. Independence Day modernized the disaster movie premise, replacing natural disasters with extraterrestrial ones and slathering on the fun. It borrowed a trend of blowing up famed national monuments from the B Movie genre and gave it steroids on screen, something that would continue over the next two decades. And it featured an ensemble cast with solid chemistry who meshed really well. Was it a perfect film? Far from it. And a sequel could go either way - but there are some promising signs. Lets take a look at those now, and examine why Independence Day: Resurgence might actually, surprisingly be good.
