1. The Why And How Behind The Alien's Return Is Known
It's not giving anything away to state that the invaders will be back in this film - there wouldn't be a movie without them. Why, though, are they returning? Emmerich has been talking about the ID4 sequel for some time, and in an interview over a year ago with Entertainment Weekly, he was pretty clear about the reasons for the alien's return - basically, the first wave sent out a distress call. As to how, well, like the recent Interstellar (but probably not on such a detailed level), the answer comes by way of worm hole. As do the aliens. "The only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us thats 20 or 25 years" Emmerich told EW.
