Infinite Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs

Ups...

4. The Undeniably Cool Premise

Infinite Mark Wahlberg
Paramount

Infinite's mediocrity is all the more frustrating because the kernels of a great sci-fi action movie are certainly there.

The idea that a small, select number of humans are reincarnated into new bodies every time they die could go in one of many intriguing directions, but the script ends up boiling it down into a generic war between two factions - the Believers, who wish to use their past lives to better humanity, and the Nihilists, who want to end life as we know it.

The notion of past lives has served as fertile ground for sci-fi films in the past - perhaps most notably, Cloud Atlas - and a more modest, character-driven film which explored the wider psychological implications of such an existence could've been fascinating.

Instead, the logline is really just window dressing for an over-familiar slice of action schlock.
