Inside Out Review: 8 Reasons It's Pixar's Best Film Since Up

3. It Sounds Incredible

You can always bet on Pixar to cast with character in mind ahead of marketability. Boo was played by a real two year old, Larry The Cable Guy played Cars most child-centric character (it didn't work out, but still) and all major roles have been taken by pretty unexpected actors. Patton Oswalt as a rat who likes to cook? Why the hell not! But they've really outdone themselves with Inside Out. Amy Poehler (Joy), Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Bill Hader (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger) and Mindy Kaling (Disgust) are all perfect as their respective emotions, not just embodying the named feeling but expanding it into a full character: Joy isn't just happy, she exhaustibly upbeat; Fear has moments of calm that contrast with his freak outs. Even the odd fits - Kaling as Disgust - are wholly realised. It's also worth giving props to Michael Giacchino for the soundtrack, particularly for his justified execution of leitmotif's; they don't just accentuate the events, but invoke the film's wider focus on memory. He rightly won an Oscar for his joy/sadness blended score for Up and could very well be looking at having to reinforce his mantle come next February.
