Interstellar: 11 Insane Spoilers Everyone Is Talking About

11. It Actually Begins With "Aliens"

At the start of the movie, young Murph (Mackenzie Foy) insists that the Cooper family home is haunted by a ghost, though it soon enough becomes apparent that this is no paranormal entity, but instead a mysterious intelligence that uses dust in Murph's room to spell out binary code, which eventually leads Cooper to a secret NASA base and kick-starts the movie's central plot (but more about NASA in a moment). Nolan drops this rather curious plot thread in viewers' laps at the start of the movie (a fact that has very intentionally been left out of trailers), which will immediately cause most to assume that aliens are the ones attempting to help save humanity. This is compounded later when, as their spaceship, the Endurance, travels through a wormhole, Cooper's colleague Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway) notices what appears to be a spectral, extra-terrestrial figure outside the vessel, though the poor lighting makes its identity ambiguous. This mystery is the main enigma running throughout the film, one that isn't truly resolved until the final reel (and don't worry, it's not really aliens).
