Interstellar: 11 Insane Spoilers Everyone Is Talking About

10. Everybody Hates NASA

One of the more interesting world-building aspects in Interstellar is the revelation that the government has essentially rewritten history regarding the Moon landing. After Murph brings an old science textbook into school which contains our present canonical understanding of the Moon landing, she is punished by the school's administrators, given that these old books are forbidden in favour of revised editions that claim the Apollo missions were faked in order to entice the Soviets into competing and, ultimately, bankrupting them. Aware of the truth, of course, Cooper isn't happy with this alternate history being taught. A school teacher tells Cooper, €œIf we don€™t want a repeat of the waste and excess of the 20th century then we need to teach our kids about this planet, not tales of leaving it", a clear statement espousing a sure dislike for NASA and the costliness of its experiments in the age of blight and dying crops. As such, NASA is forced to near enough operate in secret, with the aforementioned binary code leading Cooper to a hidden NASA base, guarded by robot TARS. Though Nolan keeps most of the details of Earth's bleak future close to the chest, this is one fascinating aspect that, while perhaps a little difficult to believe, is still impressively thought-out.
