Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus Review - 8 Ups & 1 Down
5. Character Logic Is Frequently Idiotic... And That's A Good Thing
The decisions the characters in Enter the Florpus make are, more often than not, utterly stupid. To the untrained eye, this may seem bothersome, especially for those who like to feel smart by pointing out every logical inconsistency in a given film. Meanwhile, established Zim fans will see such behavior on the characters' part as falling right in line with what they've come to expect from the series.
After all, the crux of Invader Zim's premise is that while the titular alien is technically a bad guy bent on world domination and while he may occasionally cause some legitimate damage, he's far too incompetent to actually accomplish his long-term goals. Most of the other characters are either equally as clueless or have some other flaw holding them back (i.e. Gaz's apathy.)
Such a set-up makes it easy to get invested in a series with the farthest thing from a traditional good versus evil dynamic. Rather than root for a particular side, fans can just sit back and watch the beautiful chaos. The fact that Enter the Florpus did not compromise this aspect of the series for the sake of mainstream appeal speaks to just how committed it is to being a faithful Zim experience.
Besides, the film has other ways of making sure newcomers don't feel left out.
