Is MCU Setting Up Its Next Major Phase 4 Villain?

How Mephisto Connects To Scarlet Witch

Wiccan Speed
Marvel Comics

But what does Mephisto have to do with Scarlet Witch?

In the comics, Wanda Maximoff uses magic to create her children, Billy and Tommy, who would later become the superheroes Wiccan and Speed. Unknowingly, she used two fragments of Mephisto's soul when creating them, which he eventually discovers. When this comes to his attention, the self-proclaimed "Satan" tasks Master Pandemonium to recover these fragments of his soul, and in turn, wipes Scarlet Witch's twins from existence.

Those that have watched the first two episodes of the Disney+ series WandaVision (if you haven't, what HAVE you been doing?) will know that, at the climax of episode two, Wanda falls pregnant. Teaser footage for later episodes reveals that the odd couple does indeed eventually have twin boys, which are expected to be Billy and Tommy. It would be easy for Marvel Studios to introduce Mephisto in this series, with a potential reveal later on that could expose the truth behind how Scarlet Witch came to fall pregnant.

House of M No More Mutants
Marvel Comics

The team behind WandaVision are not afraid to drop Easter eggs into the series, as witnessed already with a seemingly unimportant bottle of wine labelled "Maison Du Mepris", which translates into English as "House of Misery". Eagle-eyed Marvel fans will have spotted this and made the link immediately to the House of M storyline in the Marvel Comics. This story was the next major comic book event, following directly on from the Avengers Disassembled storyline mentioned earlier.

House of M tells the tale of Scarlet Witch's descent into madness after Mephisto wiped her children from history. Wanda Maximoff's pregnancy may lead to a harrowing revelation that she has, albeit unwittingly, used fragments of Mephisto's soul.

An appearance by Mephisto in WandaVision would certainly spell danger for the wider MCU, especially given the fact that the series is directly linked to the later Doctor Strange sequel and the third Spider-Man movie.
