Is The Han Solo Movie In More Trouble Than We Thought?
6. The Acting Coach
The concerns aren't all related to the direction of the film from on high: apparently, there's a problem with Alden Ehrenreich's central performance, which hasn't impressed Lucasfilm to the extent that an acting coach has been hired to help him.
It's a rather curious life imitating art sort of situation, as Ehrenreich's character - Hobie Doyle - in Hail! Caesar struggled badly to act and was coached rather rigidly through his scenes. Even if all they're doing is ironing out nuances, it still doesn't look great - particularly with that irony fuel.
Is It Really All That Concerning?
It's not unprecedented for an acting coach to be hired on a major movie, but the timing here is disastrous, and it makes Ehrenreich look pretty bad. The reality could be that he's simply struggling to capture what Harrison Ford brought to his original performance, rather than simply being bad.
After all, Ehrenreich isn't just being charged with performing a character, he also has to ape a forebear, copying Ford's mannerisms enough to make it seem that they're the same character. That's a remarkably difficult trick to manage.
