Isle Of Dogs Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

6. Bryan Cranston's Fantastic Vocal Performance

Isle Of Dog Chief
Fox Searchlight

The one actor who unquestionably isn't wasted in the movie is Bryan Cranston, who gives a remarkable lead performance as Chief, the irascible stray of the pack who isn't quite so eager to help young Atari (Koyu Rankin) on his mission to retrieve his own kidnapped pet, Spots.

Cranston's gravelly voice is perfect for a role like this, and knowing the full extent of the actor's dramatic range as we do, he doesn't merely make of Chief a mad-dog caricature, but also finds plenty of room to render him a well-rounded anti-hero. Cranston and Wes Anderson aren't the most natural pairing in the world, but their sensibilities work together splendidly here.
