12. The Gay Couple - Taylor Frey & Xavier Dolan

As already mentioned, the film makes a strange decision in opening with the persecution, assault and attempted murder of a gay couple - played by Taylor Frey and Xavier Dolan (director of Matthias & Maxime and Laurence Himself among others). Their involvement is clearly supposed to help sell the idea of Derry as a poisoned place, but the sequence comes off as a little unnecessary.

It also doesn't help build up the mythology of It, because it makes him a criminal of opportunity, as if he'd choose his first victim solely because it landed in his lap. And why he chooses to go after those two random adults when his rules for attacking adults should have been informed ONLY by the Losers Club thwarting him isn't established either.

Unfortunately, in an attempt to add in another message, their involvement becomes a little muddled and the performances barely matter.
