J.K. Rowling To Write New Harry Potter Spin-Off Film
Fans of the Harry Potter series will be smiling today after Warner Bros. announced plans to create more films in the Potter-verse with J.K. Rowling on writing duties for the first. Although the seven book/eight film saga has already wrapped up, the studio are looking to expand the Harry Potter mythos into some of the canon's fictional books. According to Warner, the first spinoff will be inspired by the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and the adventures of the author Newt Scamander. The resurrection of the franchise should come as no surprise the Potter films collectively racked up $7.7 billion at the box office before you even take the merchandising and other tie-ins into account. Yet in a more surprising development Warner also announced that original series author J.K Rowling will be penning for the screenplay for this new adventure believed to be the first of many. Rowling admitted that her motivation for stepping into the screenwriting world was that she wanted to do her characters justice, stating that she had a soft spot for her characters. She said:
"It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of 'Fantastic Beasts,' realized by another writer was difficult. "Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood."
