James Bond: 5 Awesome Movies and 5 That Sucked

4. The Man With the Golden Gun (1974)

I'll admit to not being a huge fan of Roger Moore's work on the James Bond series - I just can't handle the camp, and that's why you'll see him appear quite frequently in this list - but The Man with the Golden Gun is by its own virtues a maddenningly desperate, depressing Bond film. All of the key elements which should work, simply don't; the Bond girl this time is irritating - and therefore annoyingly memorable - as played by Britt Ekland, while the villain, Francisco Scaramanga, albeit played with scenery-chewing aplomb by Christopher Lee, nevertheless has bizarre flourishes, chiefly a third nipple. I mean, seriously, why not give him some awesome deformity or something; Hell, even a club foot or one arm being shorter than the other would have been better than this... Fantasy Island's token dwarf, Hervé Villechaize, playing Scaramanga's henchman Nick Nack feels at once cruel and embarrassing, adding clearly intentional laughs to what on the whole feels like an unintentionally funny film. It is Moore's shtick done so, so wrong.
