James Bond Films: Ranking Best To Worst

18. The Man With The Golden Gun

Another controversial placing, but bar a fantastic villain, it€™s all a bit too stupid for me. Not, Moore€™s films aren€™t known for their subtlety, but for the most part they are very enjoyable, but this is too generic to stand out and too weird to be fun (if that makes sense€). It€™s got a crap henchman and a really crap bond girl. And for the most part, if you take away Christopher Lee and his third nipple, the eponymous weapon, and the psychedelic madhouse (I understand villains like Blofeld having evil secret bases, but I seriously question Scaramanga€™s life choices), what can you really remember? Exciting set pieces? Killer lines? Engaging character development? Funky gadgets? Erm€ all I recall is the EON team wasting the opportunity to shoot in a beautiful part of the world (it was done much better in Tomorrow Never Dies and Skyfall) and cashing in on the Kung Fu craze of the time. Basically, it tries to be Live and Let Die and only Christopher Lee really stops it being a waste of a couple of hours. Oh, and it has a very stupid opening- almost as stupid as A View To A Kill€™s. On Her Majesty€™s Secret Service and Live and Let Die do the whole surreal thing in a more interesting way. And, like A View To A Kill, whilst I used to love Lulu€™s opening theme, it has really become very grating as I have got older. And J.W. Pepper is a character I used to love as a kid, but his €˜extended cameo€™ make him even worse than the first time around- one of the franchise€™s worst characters, up there with Woody Allen€™s Jimmy Bond€
