James Gandolfini: His 10 Best Roles

8. Mickey - Killing Them Softly

Starring alongside Brad Pitt, Gandolfini returns to his gangster best as he plays ageing hit man Mickey, brought in by long-time friend Jackie (Brad Pitt) for one final job. While Mickey has moments of humour throughout the film, his portrayal of an over the hill criminal, battling a torrent of mental demons comes across as realistic, haunting and macabre. As, what turned out to be, one of his final productions, it is perhaps fitting that audiences were able to relive what made him so successful in the Sopranos, as the parallels between Mickey and Tony Soprano are understated, yet unmissable.
