Jason Segel: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked

1. Horatio - Gulliver's Travels (2010)

If you're going to agree to acting alongside Jack Black in a comedy "vehicle" for his tired shtick, as Hollywood studios fail badly to grasp what it was that once made him one of the most endearing comic stars in the business, you should expect some criticism. Jonathan Swift is probably still spinning furiously in his grave at the very idea that Hollywood would think this was the right way to celebrate his source material. Yes, it's pretty much a kid's movie, but that doesn't excuse the fact that Rob Letterman took all of the charm of Swift's story and threw it out with all of the political allegory and philosophical motifs and turned it into an empty-headed, ugly "comedy" without a punch-line. Segel's Horatio is clearly designed to be the emotional heart of the Lilliputian story, and his arc of finding the hero inside and getting the girl is pure chocolate box tweeness. But unfortunately, it's impossible to commit any kind of memorable legacy in a film whose idea of humour is to have Jack Black urinate a fire out.
